My name is Maria Sinclair and I am mother of two and a BSL qualified Baby Sign Tutor.

I, like many of you wanted to use sign language with my children. I was already qualified in British Sign Language and had seen first hand the benefits of teaching baby sign to babies.

When I was pregnant with my first child I decided to research baby sign language to find out the specific techniques of teaching baby sign. As I began my research I realised this information would be more difficult to come by than I'd first assumed. I found that most online resources were based on American Sign Language and while there were lots of baby signing companies popping up in the UK most of them offered weekly baby signing classes and I was frustrated to realise that there were absolutely no classes local to me.

I knew of all the benefits of baby sign and was determined that my baby was not going to miss out!

I also felt that even if I could find a class I probably wouldn't have had the time - I was still working at the time and would have found it impossible to take time off for baby signing classes. I also knew that it would make sense to learn the techniques before my baby was born because I would have much less time with a new born on my hands.

A lot of the baby signing classes advertised ran during office hours and I thought - 'what about us working mums?'

Not one to give up at the first hurdle I decided to teach myself. During my pregnancy I set about learning as much as I could about teaching my baby to sign, I went ahead and bought up every book, baby sign dictionary, DVD, and online membership I could find. I spent a fortune on flash cards and sign language dictionaries and spent hours and hours researching baby sign language. I read up on methods used by Joseph Garcia who is hailed as the godfather of baby sign in America. I took his techniques and mixed them up with British Sign Language to develop my own methods.

I skimmed off the cream of the crop and then put what I'd learnt into practice. When my baby was born I spent lots of time teaching baby sign to him, I also taught my family basic baby signs so they could join in. I tried all the methods I'd learnt and then added some of my own until I developed an easy to use system that worked! My baby was signing back to me by 6 months! All the hard work had paid off!

In short I spent a lot of time and money researching baby sign language but what I gained from it was worth the effort ten fold.

When my next baby came along 2 years later I taught her to sign as well and I can honestly say that signing with my baby was a life changing experience -

Baby Signing is not just for deaf babies the benefits for all babies are fantastic. Babies naturally try to communicate from birth they will start with eye contact and facial expressions, and move on to waving and clapping. By teaching your baby basic signs you are giving him the tools to communicate in a meaningful way. Why would you want to hold your baby back from his natural development?

By about 6 months your baby will have developed the motor skills to make signs ... by 7-8 months your baby's memory will have developed enough to use the signs consistently ... your baby's vocal muscles with not have developed enough for comprehendible speech until about 18-24 months old!
